Lily didn't think about the draw Llyn Barfog, a lake in Wales, had to her, but still the husky returned there, year after year, at first with her family. Then the husky keeps going back on her holidays and long weekends, even when she has moved far away.
Her friend, Afanc, is one reason to return, of course. The hybrid has beaver-like and crocodilian features, but she is sure that is not his name - for "afanc" means "monster," in a crude form, in the Welsh language. Yet his kind eyes and easy smile are all she needs to pass her afternoon, sitting on the banks of the lake and drawing while he shares the moment with her.
Over the years, however, something deeper has built between then, the husky looking at her old friend in a new light - or maybe that warm glow was always there and she merely had to see it for herself. As they come together, hands touching and her body drawn protectively into his broad, bare chest, Lily knows she is exactly where she wants to be.
Home was in Afanc's arms all along.
